“A godparent is a spiritual mentor, a witness of the faith, and a guide to Christ”

Godparents (sponsors) play an important role in the spiritual life of the person being baptized. Their task is not only to be present at the Sacrament, but to help their godchild grow in the faith, to be an example of Christian life, and a support on the path to Christ.

What you need to know

  • Godparents must be Orthodox Christians — baptized and living the life of the Church.
  • They must be of age (from 14 years old — at the discretion of the clergy).
  • The following cannot be godparents: spouses to each other, the child's own parents, people of another faith or non-believers.
  • It is recommended to choose one or two godparents (a man and/or a woman).
  • A godparent must be ready to take on spiritual responsibility for the godchild: to pray for them, help them come to know the faith, and lead them into the life of the Church.
  • Before the Sacrament, prospective godparents attend catechetical (preparatory) talks.
  • Personal attendance at the Baptism is required.
  • It is advisable to go to Confession and receive Holy Communion beforehand.

The duties of a godparent

  • To pray for one's godchild throughout life.
  • To help them in their spiritual life, teach them to pray, and bring them to the Sacraments.
  • To be an example of Christian life.
  • To stand by them in difficult moments and give spiritual support.

Being a godparent is not a formality but a blessed ministry.
May the Lord strengthen you on this path! ❤️
