“What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder” (Matthew 19:6)
Dear bride and groom, beloved in the Lord!
If you have decided to unite your hearts and lives before God, we warmly welcome your intention and are ready to help you prepare for the Sacrament of Marriage.
The wedding is not merely a beautiful ceremony but a holy Sacrament in which God blesses the marital union of a man and a woman. In marriage the spouses are called to walk together towards salvation, towards love and sacrifice — in the image of the union of Christ and the Church.
What you need to know
- Both spouses must be baptized in the Orthodox Church.
- The marriage must be registered with the civil registry office.
- A first marriage is preferable (for questions concerning a second marriage, please speak to a priest).
- Preparatory talks with a priest and a catechist are held before the Sacrament of Marriage.
- Pre-wedding talks at Saint Alexius Cathedral take place every Saturday at 12:00, after the Divine Liturgy, in the Sunday school.
- Both spouses must attend the talks.
- Duration: 10 lessons.
- Weddings are performed by prior appointment — usually on Sundays or feast days, by arrangement.
- Weddings are not performed during fasts, or on the eve of and during major church feasts. Please check the dates in advance.
What to bring to the wedding
- Icons of the Saviour and of the Mother of God (if you do not have them, they can be purchased at the cathedral).
- Wedding rings.
- A white cloth (rushnyk), two wedding candles, small kerchiefs (also available at the cathedral).
- Passport and marriage certificate (for the entry in the register).
With love in Christ and with prayer for your union! ❤️
