A former executioner who publicly repented and accepted a martyr's death for Christ during the persecution of King Shapur II.
Martyr Aphthonius of Persia was an executioner who carried out the killing of Christian martyrs during the persecution of the Persian king Shapur II. Struck by the steadfastness and faith of those he executed, he publicly asked their forgiveness for the suffering he had caused, declared himself a Christian, and bravely accepted execution for Christ. He suffered between 341 and 345 together with other Persian martyrs — Akindynos, Pegasius, Elpidiphorus, and Anempodistus.
