Bishop of Pedachthoe, martyred together with his ten disciples in Sebaste under Diocletian or Maximinus II.
Hieromartyr Athenogenes, Bishop of Pedachthoe, and his ten disciples suffered for Christ in the Asia Minor city of Sebaste during the reign of Emperor Diocletian (284–305), or, according to other sources, around 311 under Emperor Maximinus II. When the governor Philomarchus arrived in Sebaste and decided to hold a pagan festival with sacrifices, most of the Christian citizens refused to take part. St. Athenogenes and his disciples lived in a small monastery near the city; his only request before execution was to be put to death within its walls. He is also known as the reputed author of the evening hymn "Phos Hilaron" (Gladsome Light).
