Hierarch
Hierarch Agapetus I of Rome
папа Римский 535–536
Pope of Rome (535–536), a zealous champion of Orthodoxy who healed the sick and died in Constantinople during a peace embassy.
Hierarch Agapetus I was elevated to the See of Rome in 535 and earned universal respect through his pious life. The Gothic king Theodoric the Great sent him to Constantinople to negotiate peace. On the way, the hierarch healed a lame and mute man, who began to speak after receiving Holy Communion. In Constantinople, Agapetus healed a blind beggar and secured the deposition of the Monophysite heretic Anthimus from the patriarchal throne, installing the Orthodox Mennas in his place. He died in Constantinople in 536, having zealously defended the Orthodox teaching on the two natures of Christ against the Monophysite heresy.
