Venerable Agapitus of the Kiev Caves, the Unmercenary Physician

Venerable Agapitus of the Caves was a Kievan monk, a disciple of Venerable Anthony of the Caves, renowned as an unmercenary physician who healed the sick through prayer, fasting, and herbs, accepting nothing in return. Through his prayers he healed the gravely ill Prince Vladimir Monomakh, but hid from his gratitude, not desiring worldly fame. An envious Armenian physician at the princely court attempted to poison the saint, but the poison had no effect; Agapitus later converted this physician to Christ through his miracles, and the man took monastic vows. He died around 1095. His relics rest in the Near (Anthony's) Caves of the Kiev Caves Lavra.
