Hierarch Aidan of Lindisfarne

Hierarch Aidan was an Irish monk of the monastery on the island of Iona (Scotland). At the request of King Oswald of Northumbria, he arrived in Northumbria in 635 to preach Christianity and founded the monastery on the island of Lindisfarne, becoming its first bishop. He was known for his non-acquisitiveness, mercy toward the poor and enslaved (often ransoming them to freedom), zealous preaching, and gift of working miracles. He labored greatly to enlighten Northern England with the light of Christ, for which he is venerated as the Apostle of Northumbria. He died on 31 August 651. As a saint of the undivided Church who lived before the Great Schism, he is venerated not only in the Catholic and Anglican Churches but also in the Orthodox Church.
