Hierarch
Hierarch Achillas of Alexandria
патриарх Александрийский 312–313
Also known as: Ахилл Александрийский
Patriarch of Alexandria (312–313), successor of Hieromartyr Peter I, an opponent of the Meletian schism.
Hierarch Achillas headed the See of Alexandria in 312, succeeding Hieromartyr Peter I of Alexandria, who suffered under Emperor Maximinus Daza. During his brief tenure, Hierarch Achillas restored the presbyter Arius to the priesthood, though he did not share Arius's theological views (later condemned as heresy at the First Ecumenical Council); he was also a determined opponent of the Meletian schism that had arisen in the Egyptian Church. He died on 13 June 312 or 313; Byzantine church calendars commemorate him on 3 June. He was succeeded on the see by Hierarch Alexander of Alexandria.
