Hieromartyr
Hieromartyr Alexander of Comana
† III век
Also known as: Александр Углежжитель
A learned philosopher who voluntarily took up foolishness for Christ and sold charcoal; chosen Bishop of Comana by Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea, burned to death under Diocletian (or Decius).
Hieromartyr Alexander of Comana was a learned philosopher who voluntarily took up the ascetic feat of foolishness and lived in poverty, selling charcoal. When the city of Comana needed a new bishop, Saint Gregory of Neocaesarea (the Wonderworker), rejecting outwardly worthy candidates, by God's revelation chose the humble charcoal-seller. After his ordination as bishop, Saint Alexander wisely shepherded his flock. Under Emperor Diocletian (according to another version, Decius), he was seized as a Christian and, refusing to worship idols, suffered martyrdom by burning.
