Martyr Amphianus of Lycia

Martyr Amphianus (Aphianus) was born in the city of Patara in the Lycian province together with his brother Aedesius. The brothers were sent to Beirut to study pagan sciences, where they converted to Christ. Amphianus became a zealous disciple of Hieromartyr Pamphilus of Caesarea. During the persecution of Emperor Maximian, Amphianus was seized by order of the governor, severely beaten, and thrown into prison. At trial he was tortured for two days with iron rods and had pitch-soaked flax burned on his body; firmly confessing the Christian faith, he was thrown into the sea with a stone around his neck in 306. A sudden storm arose and washed his body ashore, where Christians buried him with honor. His brother Aedesius also endured torture and was sent to the copper mines, receiving martyrdom in 310.
