Venerable

Venerable Ammon (Amoun) of Nitria

сер. IV века

Also known as: Аммун Нитрийский, Ammonas of Scetis (неточное отождествление в слаге)

Founder of the monastic settlement in the Nitrian desert, friend and companion of Venerable Anthony the Great.

Venerable Ammon withdrew to the Nitrian desert (Egypt), where he founded one of the first major monastic settlements, and spent 22 years there, attaining high spiritual perfection and the gifts of miracle-working and clairvoyance. He often came for a blessing to Venerable Anthony the Great, with whom he shared a spiritual friendship. According to tradition, at the hour of Venerable Ammon's death, Saint Anthony, though far away, saw angels joyfully raising the righteous one's soul to heaven; Anthony's disciples, counting the days, confirmed that Ammon had reposed at the very hour of Anthony's vision, and glorified God. He died in the mid-4th century.
