Hierarch Anatolius of Constantinople

Patriarch of Constantinople (449–458), who fought Monophysitism and presided over the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon (451).
Hierarch Anatolius received a philosophical education in Alexandria, where he was made a deacon under Saint Cyril of Alexandria. Elected to the patriarchal See of Constantinople in 449, he labored zealously to restore the purity of Orthodoxy, which had been shaken by the Monophysite heresy. He helped convene the Fourth Ecumenical Council at Chalcedon (451), over which he presided and which finally condemned Monophysitism, affirming the Orthodox teaching on the two natures of Christ. He died in 458.
