Venerable Angelar of Ohrid

Venerable Angelar lived in the 9th century, was a disciple of Saints Cyril and Methodius Equal-to-the-Apostles, and labored in Christian enlightenment in Moravia and Pannonia. When Hierarch Methodius reposed in 885, the presbyter Angelar, together with fellow disciples Gorazd, Clement, Naum, and Sava, was slandered before Prince Svatopluk and imprisoned. After torture and beatings, all except Gorazd were stripped and expelled from the country. They reached Bulgaria, where they were warmly received by Prince Boris of Bulgaria, Equal-to-the-Apostles. Angelar settled in the home of the boyar Cheslav but soon died from the sufferings and deprivations he had endured. He is venerated among the Holy Seven (Sedmochislenitsi, together with Cyril, Methodius, Gorazd, Clement, Naum, and Sava of Ohrid) and in the Synaxis of Bulgarian Saints.
