Hierarch Ansgar of Hamburg, "Apostle of the North" — first Bishop of Hamburg (from 831), a missionary who converted the kings of Denmark to Christ and preached in Sweden; venerated as a saint of the pre-schism Church, including in the Synaxis of the Saints of the German Land.
Hierarch Ansgar was born in 801 in France. In 831 he was appointed the first Bishop of Hamburg, whose diocese covered the entire German north. From 848 to 854 he undertook a mission to Denmark, achieving the conversion of the Danish king, and then successfully continued preaching the Gospel in Sweden. He fell asleep in the Lord in Bremen on February 3, 865, and was immediately venerated by Christians as a saint. He is honored in the Russian Orthodox Church among the pre-schism Western saints, in particular in the Synaxis of the Saints of the German Land.
