Venerable
Venerable Anthony Of Chernozero
† 1598
Venerable Anthony of Chernoezero founded the Nativity of the Theotokos Monastery on Lake Chernoye in the Novgorod lands (near Cherepovets); he reposed in 1598.
Venerable Anthony came to the shore of one of the "Black Lakes" (Chernoye) in the Novgorod lands, 40 versts northeast of the town of Cherepovets, and built a church there — thus was founded the Chernoezersky Monastery of the Nativity of the Theotokos. He reposed in 1598 in his hermitage. The saint's relics rested under the floor behind the right choir of the wooden Church of the Nativity of the Theotokos, built in 1839 on the site of an ancient chapel over his grave. His memory is kept on January 17/30, the day he shares a name-day with Venerable Anthony the Great, as well as on the 3rd Sunday after Pentecost in the Synaxis of the Saints of Novgorod.
