Venerable Anthony the Roman of Novgorod

Venerable Anthony the Roman — born in Rome to an Orthodox family, he miraculously sailed on a rock to Novgorod in 1106, where with the blessing of St. Nikita he founded the Monastery of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos (Anthony's Monastery); he died in 1147 at age 79.
Venerable Anthony the Roman was born in 1067 in Rome into a wealthy Orthodox family. In 1106, after a miraculous sea voyage, he arrived in Veliky Novgorod. With the blessing of St. Nikita, Bishop of Novgorod, he founded a monastery in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos. He died on August 3, 1147, at the age of 79. His memory is kept on August 3/16 (day of repose), January 17/30 (name-day shared with Venerable Anthony the Great), and on the Friday after the week following the feast of the Apostles Peter and Paul (finding of his relics in 1597). The original card contained only the bare name "Anthony" with no qualifier and an overly broad year range ("12th–16th century"); the identity has been matched to the best-known Novgorod ascetic of this name.
