Apostle Bartholomew (Nathanael) — one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, a native of Cana of Galilee; he preached in India, where he translated the Gospel of Matthew into the local language, and in Armenia, where he was martyred (according to tradition, crucified upside down and/or flayed alive).
Apostle Bartholomew (identified with Nathanael of the Gospel of John) — one of the Twelve closest disciples of Christ, a native of Cana of Galilee. After the descent of the Holy Spirit, he preached the Gospel in India, where he translated the Gospel of Matthew into the local language and converted many pagans to Christ. He also preached in Greater Armenia, where he healed the daughter of King Polymius of demonic possession and converted many to Christ, for which he was seized at the instigation of pagan priests by the king's brother Astyages. He was martyred — according to tradition, crucified upside down and then flayed alive, after which he was beheaded. To prevent his enemies from desecrating his relics, the reliquary was thrown into the sea and miraculously reached the island of Lipari. His memory is kept on June 11/24 together with Apostle Barnabas, as well as August 25/September 7, the day of the translation of his relics.
