Apostle James son of Alphaeus — one of the Twelve Apostles of Christ, son of Alphaeus, brother of the Apostle and Evangelist Matthew (Levi); according to tradition, he preached in Judea, Edessa, and Egypt, where he was crucified.
Apostle James son of Alphaeus was one of the Twelve closest disciples of Christ, son of Alphaeus and the brother of the Apostle and Evangelist Matthew (Levi). After the descent of the Holy Spirit, he preached the Gospel in Judea, and then in Edessa (Syria) and Egypt, converting pagans to Christ. According to tradition, he was martyred in the Egyptian city of Ostrachine, crucified on a cross. His memory is kept on October 9/22.
