Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian — the "beloved disciple" of Christ, younger brother of Apostle James son of Zebedee, the only one of the Twelve Apostles to die a natural death in old age; author of the fourth Gospel, three Catholic Epistles, and the Apocalypse (Revelation).
Apostle and Evangelist John the Theologian, son of Zebedee and younger brother of Apostle James, was the "beloved disciple" of the Lord, who reclined on His breast at the Last Supper, and the only one of the apostles who did not abandon Christ at the Cross — the Savior entrusted him with the care of His Mother. Together with Peter and James, he was one of the three closest disciples who witnessed the Transfiguration and the raising of Jairus's daughter. After Pentecost he preached in Asia Minor, was exiled to the island of Patmos under Emperor Domitian, where he wrote the Apocalypse (Revelation). He is the author of the fourth Gospel and three Catholic Epistles. The only one of the Twelve Apostles to die a natural death in old age, in Ephesus, around the year 101. His main commemoration is September 26/October 9 (repose); also May 8/21, when, according to tradition, a fine healing dust (manna) issued annually from his tomb; and June 30/July 13 in the Synaxis of the Twelve Apostles.
