Apostle Joseph Barsabbas (Justus) of the Seventy — one of the two disciples proposed to take the place of the fallen Judas Iscariot, in whose stead Matthias was chosen by lot (Acts 1:23); he later became bishop and martyr in Eleutheropolis.
Apostle Joseph, surnamed Barsabbas and Justus, was one of the two disciples of Christ (along with Matthias) whom the other apostles put forward to take the place of the fallen Judas Iscariot; the lot fell upon Matthias (Acts 1:23-26). Nevertheless, St. Joseph did not abandon apostolic service and was made a bishop. He was martyred in the city of Eleutheropolis. His memory is kept on October 30/November 12, as well as January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
