Apostle Nicanor
I век
Apostle Nicanor of the Seventy — one of the seven first deacons chosen by the apostles for service (Acts 6:5); he was martyred on the same day that the Protomartyr Archdeacon Stephen was stoned.
Apostle Nicanor of the Seventy was one of the seven men whom the Twelve Apostles, on the advice of the whole community, chose and appointed to the diaconal ministry: Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas, and Nicolas, "of honest report, full of the Holy Ghost and wisdom" (Acts 6:1-6). According to tradition, St. Nicanor was martyred on the same day that the Holy Protomartyr Archdeacon Stephen was stoned, together with many other Christians. Although the seven deacons died at different times and in different places, the Church honors their common memory on July 28/August 10, as well as January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
