Apostle Philip — one of the Twelve closest disciples of Christ, a native of Bethsaida in Galilee, a profound knower of Holy Scripture; he brought Apostle Nathanael to Christ; he preached in Galilee, Syria, Asia Minor, and Phrygia, where he was martyred on a cross.
Apostle Philip was a native of the city of Bethsaida in Galilee and a profound knower of Holy Scripture. Called by Christ ("Follow Me"), he immediately brought his friend Nathanael to Him (John 1:43-46). St. Philip is mentioned several times in the Gospel: the Lord asked him how many loaves were needed to feed five thousand people (John 6:5-7); Greeks wishing to see Jesus approached him (John 12:20-22); at the Last Supper he asked Christ to show the disciples God the Father, to which he received the answer, "He that hath seen me hath seen the Father" (John 14:8-9). After the Ascension of the Lord, he preached the Word of God in Galilee, Syria, Asia Minor, and Phrygia, accompanying his preaching with miracles. According to tradition, in the city of Hierapolis in Phrygia he was seized by pagans and crucified upside down on a cross (according to another version, on a tree), being martyred. His memory is kept on November 14/27.
