Apostle Rufus of the Seventy — mentioned by Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans (16:13); according to tradition, he was bishop in Thebes (Greece); some commentators identify him with the son of Simon of Cyrene, who carried Christ's Cross (Mark 15:21).
Apostle Rufus of the Seventy is mentioned by Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans: "Salute Asyncritus, Phlegon, Hermas, Patrobas, Hermes... Salute Rufus chosen in the Lord, and his mother and mine" (Romans 16:13-14). Some commentators identify him with Rufus, son of Simon of Cyrene, who was compelled to carry Christ's Cross to Golgotha (Mark 15:21) — if this identification is correct, Rufus's mother, whom Paul calls his own, held a special place in the Apostle's life. According to church tradition, Apostle Rufus was made Bishop of Thebes in Greece. His memory is kept on April 8/21 together with the Apostles of the Seventy Herodion, Agabus, Asyncritus, and Phlegon, as well as January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
