Apostle Silvanus of the Seventy — co-worker of Apostles Peter and Paul, co-author and bearer of several epistles (2 Cor. 1:19; 1 Thess. 1:1; 1 Peter 5:12); according to tradition, Bishop of Thessalonica, who died a martyr.
Apostle Silvanus of the Seventy — a co-worker of Apostles Peter and Paul, mentioned in their epistles as a faithful collaborator and co-author: he is named together with Paul and Timothy as sender of both Epistles to the Thessalonians (1 Thess. 1:1; 2 Thess. 1:1) and 2 Corinthians (2 Cor. 1:19), and Apostle Peter names him as the one through whom he wrote his First Epistle (1 Peter 5:12). According to church tradition, he was made Bishop of Thessalonica and was martyred there. Some commentators (including Blessed Theodoret) consider Apostle Silvanus to be the same person as Apostle Silas of Acts, but church tradition commemorates them separately, each with his own service (see apostle_silas). His memory is kept on July 30/August 12 together with Apostles Silas, Crescens, Epenetus, and Andronicus, as well as January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
