Simon of Cyrene is a real Gospel figure who was compelled to carry Christ's Cross to Golgotha (Matt. 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26); his inclusion among the Seventy Apostles appears only in certain apocryphal/late lists and is NOT confirmed by the official liturgical calendar.
Simon of Cyrene is mentioned in all three Synoptic Gospels: passing by, he was forced by Roman soldiers to carry Christ's Cross to Golgotha (Matt. 27:32; Mark 15:21; Luke 23:26). The Evangelist Mark specifies that Simon was "the father of Alexander and Rufus" — a mention some commentators connect to the Apostle Rufus greeted by Paul in Romans 16:13 (see apostle_rufus). Simon of Cyrene's name appears in some later Byzantine catalogues of the Seventy Apostles together with Eubulus and Nymphas (under February 28), but these names are absent from the commonly accepted list of the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles and from the Moscow Patriarchate calendar. Given the disputed liturgical status, the card is kept as informational (a real Gospel figure) but is not shown in the site's church calendar as having a confirmed feast day.
