Apostle Stachys of the Seventy — mentioned by Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans (16:9) as "beloved"; according to tradition, he was made the first Bishop of Byzantium by Apostle Andrew the First-Called — the city on whose site Constantinople later arose.
Apostle Stachys of the Seventy is mentioned by Apostle Paul in the Epistle to the Romans: "Salute my well-beloved Epenetus... Salute Urbane, our helper in Christ, and Stachys my beloved" (Romans 16:5-9). According to church tradition, Apostle Andrew the First-Called made Stachys the first Bishop of Byzantium — a small settlement on the shore of the Bosphorus on whose site Constantinople, capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, later arose. He shepherded his flock for 16 years, instructing them in the Christian faith. His memory is kept on October 31/November 13 together with the Apostles Amplias, Urban, Narcissus, Apelles, and Aristobulus, as well as January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
