Apostle Tertius of the Seventy — the scribe who wrote down Apostle Paul's Epistle to the Romans at his dictation (Romans 16:22); according to tradition, the second Bishop of Iconium (after Sosipater), where he was martyred.
Apostle Tertius identifies himself at the end of the Epistle to the Romans: "I Tertius, who wrote this epistle, salute you in the Lord" (Romans 16:22) — he was the scribe to whom Apostle Paul dictated the text. According to church tradition, he became the second Bishop of Iconium (after Apostle Sosipater), where he labored greatly for the establishment of Christianity and was martyred. Various menologies list his memory under several dates: June 21/July 4 (his own day), October 30/November 12, and also November 10/23 together with the Apostles Erastus, Olympas, Herodion, Sosipater, and Quartus; his general commemoration in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles is January 4/17.
