Apostle Timon of the Seventy — one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles for service (Acts 6:5); Bishop of Bostra in Arabia, thrown by pagans into a burning furnace but unharmed by the fire; he departed to the Lord in peace.
Apostle Timon of the Seventy was one of the seven deacons chosen by the apostles to serve those in need (Acts 6:5), together with Stephen, Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Parmenas, and Nicholas. According to church tradition (the Great Menaion of St. Demetrius of Rostov), he was made Bishop of the city of Bostra in Arabia; preaching the name of Christ, he suffered greatly from Jews and Greeks, was thrown into a burning furnace but remained unharmed, and departed to the Lord in peace. His own commemoration is kept on December 30/January 12; also July 28/August 10 together with the Apostles Prochorus, Nicanor, and Parmenas (see apostle_prochorus), and January 4/17 in the Synaxis of the Seventy Apostles.
