Righteous Asher

Righteous Asher — the eighth son of the Old Testament patriarch Jacob, born of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant; forefather of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel, whose land Jacob prophesied would be rich and abundant in fruit.
Righteous Asher (Hebrew for "happy, blessed") was the eighth son of the Old Testament patriarch Jacob, born of Zilpah, Leah's maidservant (Genesis 30:12-13). He became the forefather of one of the Twelve Tribes of Israel. In his deathbed blessing of his sons, the patriarch Jacob prophesied concerning Asher: "Out of Asher his bread shall be fat, and he shall yield royal dainties" (Genesis 49:20) — a prophecy fulfilled in that the land of the tribe of Asher proved extraordinarily fertile, its produce supplied to the tables of Israelite and Phoenician kings. From the tribe of Asher came the prophetess Anna, who met the infant Christ in the Temple of Jerusalem (Luke 2:36-38). The Church honors the memory of Righteous Asher together with all the Old Testament forefathers on the Sunday of the Holy Forefathers before the Nativity of Christ.
