Hierarch Athanasius I Of Constantinople

Hierarch Athanasius I, Patriarch of Constantinople (born Alexios) — twice occupied the patriarchal see (1289-1293 and 1303-1310); a strict ascetic who took monastic and great-schema vows on Athos, a zealot for church order, who twice withdrew into seclusion due to conflicts with the emperor and nobility.
Hierarch Athanasius, born Alexios, was born in 1230 in Adrianople. From his youth he devoted himself to monastic life, laboring on Mount Athos and in other monasteries, and took the great schema at the Athonite monastery of Esphigmenou. He twice occupied the patriarchal see of Constantinople (1289-1293 and 1303-1310), proving himself a strict zealot for church order and clerical morality, which provoked resistance and discontent among part of the clergy and nobility, at times forcing him into seclusion. He was not afraid to denounce injustice and luxury at the imperial court. He died in Constantinople on October 28, 1310. Two of his lives are known, written in the 14th century by Theoktistos the Stoudite and Joseph Kalothetos. His memory according to the Julian calendar is kept on October 24/November 6 (in the Greek Church his feast day is October 28).
