Venerable Athanasius Of Syandem

Venerable Athanasius of Syandemsk, Vologda — a disciple of Venerable Alexander of Svir who was granted to witness the gracious appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos to his mentor; after laboring on Valaam and at the Svir Monastery, he withdrew into the Karelian forests, where he founded a hermitage on Lake Syandema.
Venerable Athanasius was a disciple of Venerable Alexander of Svir and was granted to witness the miraculous appearance of the Most Holy Theotokos to his mentor. He began his monastic labors on the island of Valaam, then continued them at the Svir Monastery under his teacher's guidance. Seeking a more solitary asceticism, he withdrew into the impenetrable forests of Karelia, where on the shore of Lake Syandema he founded a hermit monastery, which later became the Syandemsk Dormition Monastery. He became renowned for his strict ascetic life and labor of prayer. His memory is kept on January 18/31.
