Martyr Авдий (Авид) Персидский
†нач. V века
Martyr Abdas (Avid) of Persia — a Christian bishop in Persia, friend of St. Maruthas of Mesopotamia and enjoying the patronage of Shahanshah Yazdegerd I; he was martyred for refusing to renounce Christ and worship the sun and fire in the early 5th century.
Martyr Abdas (Avid) was a Christian bishop in Persia in the early 5th century. He enjoyed the friendship of St. Maruthas of Mesopotamia and for a time the patronage of the Persian Shahanshah Yazdegerd I, known for his relative tolerance toward Christians. Despite this favor, for his firm refusal to renounce Christ and worship the pagan shrines of sun and fire, he was subjected to cruel torture. To his last breath he thanked God for granting him to die for His holy name. In various menologies the memory of St. Abdas is given under several dates (October 17/30; some sources also give March 31 and September 5/18) due to discrepancies in the ancient lists.
