Hierarch Barsanuphius Of Tver

Hierarch Barsanuphius II, Bishop of Tver, Wonderworker of Kazan — a native of Serpukhov; in 1567 he was consecrated Bishop of Tver and Kashin; earlier he labored extensively in establishing Christianity among the Tatars of the Kazan region together with St. Gurias of Kazan.
Hierarch Barsanuphius was born around 1495 in the city of Serpukhov. In his youth he was taken captive by Tatars, where he learned the Tatar language, which later played an important role in his missionary service. After returning from captivity, he took monastic vows. He labored extensively together with St. Gurias, Archbishop of Kazan, in the enlightenment and establishment of the Christian faith among the Tatar population of the newly conquered Kazan region, founding monasteries and instructing the local inhabitants. In 1567, after the death of Bishop Akakiy of Tver, he was consecrated by Metropolitan Philip as Bishop of Tver and Kashin. Hierarchs Gurias and Barsanuphius were glorified among the saints by decree of Patriarch Job. He died in Kazan on April 11, 1576. His memory is kept on April 11 and October 4, as well as in the Synaxes of Kazan and Tver Saints.
