Prophet Baruch

Prophet Baruch — disciple and secretary of the Prophet Jeremiah, author of the Old Testament book bearing his name; he accompanied Jeremiah into Egypt after the destruction of Jerusalem by the Babylonians.
Prophet Baruch, son of Neriah, came from a noble Jerusalem family and was the closest disciple and secretary of the Prophet Jeremiah. At Jeremiah's instruction, he wrote down his prophecies on a scroll and read them before the people and the princes of Judah in the Temple (Jeremiah 36). For this both were persecuted by King Jehoiakim, who ordered the scroll burned, but Baruch, dictated to again by Jeremiah, restored the text, adding new prophecies. After the destruction of Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar in 586 BC, he was taken with Jeremiah by fleeing Jews into Egypt, where, according to tradition, both died. He is the author of the Old Testament book bearing his name (the Book of Baruch) — one of the non-canonical (deuterocanonical) books of the Old Testament, continuing Jeremiah's prophetic and consoling message. His memory is kept on September 28/October 11.
