Venerable Basil Solotchinsky

Venerable Basil labored as a hermit monk in the dense forests near where the Solotcha River flows into the Oka, not far from the city of Ryazan. In 1390, Grand Prince Oleg Ivanovich of Ryazan, arriving at the bank of the Solotcha, discovered two hermit monks here — Basil and Euthymius — who lived with a small brotherhood in wooden cells and held services in a wooden church. Struck by their ascetic life, Prince Oleg founded the Solotcha Monastery in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos on this site, which later became one of the significant monasteries of the Ryazan land. The exact date of Venerable Basil's repose has not survived in the available sources.
