Hierarch Benedict was elected Bishop of Rome (Pope) in 684, during an era when the Eastern and Western Churches were still in liturgical and canonical unity (before the Schism of 1054). He occupied the Roman see for a short time — less than a year, until his death on May 8, 685. He is known for his role in the ecclesiastical-political processes connected with confirming in the West the decisions of the Sixth Ecumenical Council (680-681, Constantinople), which condemned the Monothelite heresy (the teaching of a single will in Christ). As a Pope of Rome from the era of the undivided Church, he is venerated as a saint in the Western tradition; a separate confirmation of his feast day in Orthodox liturgical sources was not found in the course of this research — in the Western tradition his memory is kept on May 7.
