Blessed Augustine, Bishop of Hippo — one of the greatest Western Fathers of the Church of the undivided-Church era; author of the "Confessions" and "The City of God"; he governed the see of Hippo (North Africa) for thirty-five years and actively combated heresies (Manichaeism, Donatism, Pelagianism), leaving behind a rich theological legacy.
Blessed Augustine (Aurelius Augustinus) was born on November 13, 354, in the city of Thagaste in North Africa (modern Algeria). He received a brilliant rhetorical education, was drawn to Manichaeism in his youth, and led a life far from Christian piety, which he later recounted in detail and with repentance in his famous autobiographical work, the "Confessions." Under the influence of the preaching of St. Ambrose of Milan and the prayers of his mother, the righteous Monica, he underwent a profound spiritual conversion and was baptized in 387. In 391 he was ordained a presbyter, and in 395 a bishop of the city of Hippo (North Africa), where he shepherded his flock for 35 years, until his death. He actively combated the heresies of Manichaeism, Donatism, and Pelagianism, defending the teaching on grace and original sin. He left behind a colossal theological legacy, including the treatise "The City of God" and numerous exegetical, polemical, and pastoral works. In Orthodoxy he is traditionally called "Blessed"; his memory was entered into the Russian menologion, presumably following the Synaxarion of St. Nicodemus the Hagiorite. He died on August 28, 430, during the siege of Hippo by the Vandals. His memory according to the Russian menologion is kept on June 15/28; in the Catholic Church, on August 28 (day of repose).
