Blessed George of Shenkursk, Fool for Christ — born to a peasant family in the now-defunct village of Yarupolye in the Veliko-Nikolsky parish near the town of Shenkursk (Russian North); after his parents' death he took up the feat of foolishness, wandering through forests and impassable places.
Blessed George was born to a peasant family in the now-defunct village of Yarupolye in the Veliko-Nikolsky parish, near the town of Shenkursk in the Russian North. The exact time of his life is not established, but according to indirect evidence (a mention in an encomium to Righteous Procopius of Ustyug composed in the 16th century), he lived no later than the 15th century. After his parents' death he took up the feat of foolishness for Christ's sake: he wore rags that barely covered his body and withdrew from people, wandering through forests and impassable places. According to handwritten menologia, he died on April 23 — the day of his name-day (the feast of the Great Martyr George the Victory-Bearer). No other detailed information about his life has survived. His memory is kept on April 23/May 6.
