Blessed Matrona (Matryona Grigoryevna Belyakova) was born on November 6, 1864, in the village of Anemnyasevo, Kasimov district, Ryazan province. At the age of seven she contracted smallpox, after which she went blind, and after brutal beatings from her parents she lost the ability to move and remained bedridden for the rest of her life. Despite the most severe physical suffering, rumors of her spiritual gifts and miracles quickly spread through the surrounding villages and districts; thousands of pilgrims flocked to her for healing and spiritual counsel. Her life was compiled during her lifetime by the priest Nicholas Anatolyevich Pravdolyubov and his brother Vladimir. During the years of persecution she was arrested as a "socially dangerous element" and endured the confessor's feat. She died on July 16, 1936. Her memory is kept on July 16/29.
