Righteous Simon Of Yuryevets

Blessed Simon of Yuryevets, Fool for Christ — born in Kostroma province; from his youth he left home and settled in the forests near the village of Elnat, taking up the feat of foolishness; after 15 years of asceticism in Elnat he moved to the town of Yuryevets-on-the-Volga, where he acquired the gift of clairvoyance and wonderworking.
Blessed Simon was born within Kostroma province. From his youth he left home and settled in the forests near the village of Elnat, taking up the feat of foolishness for Christ's sake. He helped local residents with hard labor, invariably refusing payment; winter and summer he walked barefoot in a single shirt, meekly enduring mockery and beatings. After spending 15 years in Elnat, he moved to the town of Yuryevets-on-the-Volga. He was granted by God the gift of clairvoyance and wonderworking: according to tradition, he extinguished a fire and healed the sick. He died on November 4, 1584, after severe beatings. In 1666 a special service was composed for Blessed Simon. His memory is kept on November 4/17 (day of repose), and also on May 10/23; he is venerated within the Synaxis of Ivanovo Saints.
