Martyr Boyan (Enravota), Prince of Bulgaria — son of the pagan Bulgarian Khan Omurtag; he secretly accepted Christianity from a captive Greek monk and, refusing to renounce his faith, was executed by order of his own brother, Khan Malamir, becoming the first known Bulgarian Christian martyr.
Martyr Boyan, baptized Enravota, was the son of the pagan Bulgarian Khan Omurtag (ruled c. 814–831) and brother of Khan Malamir. He secretly accepted Christianity, converted by a captive Greek missionary monk named Cinamon. Upon learning of his brother's betrayal of the ancestral pagan faith, Khan Malamir demanded he renounce Christ, but Boyan firmly refused and was martyred around 830, becoming the first Bulgarian martyr for the Christian faith known by name — decades before the official baptism of Bulgaria under Tsar Boris (864). His memory is kept on March 28/April 10.
