Venerable, Deacon Martyrius, Deacon of the Kiev Caves

Venerable Martyrius, Deacon of the Kiev Caves (14th c.) — a monk of the Far (Theodosian) Caves who pleased God with purity and a strict ascetic life, and who was glorified during his lifetime with the gift of casting out demons and healing ailments. IMPORTANT: the name "Martyrius" (Greek for "witness") is here a personal name, not an indication of bloody martyrdom — by rank he is a venerable, not a martyr.
Venerable Martyrius, a deacon, labored at the Kiev Caves Monastery in the 14th century. He pleased God with purity and a strict ascetic life, for which even during his lifetime he was glorified with the gift of wonderworking — casting out demons and healing various ailments. His relics rest in the Far (Theodosian) Caves of the Lavra, where his diligence, righteousness, and purity of heart are extolled. Venerable Martyrius's name is commemorated in the 7th ode of the canon to the venerable fathers of the Far Caves. His memory is kept on October 25/November 7, and also on August 28/September 10 within the Synaxis of the Fathers of the Far Caves and on the 2nd Sunday of Great Lent within the general Synaxis of the Kiev Caves Saints.
