Martyr Claudius the Tribune, Hilaria, and their sons Jason and Maurus, of Rome

The military tribune Claudius was assigned to guard in prison the martyrs Chrysanthus and Daria, who had entered into marriage only in appearance in order to preserve their virginity and devote themselves entirely to Christ. Having witnessed their unshakeable faith and miracles, Claudius came to believe in Christ and was baptized together with his wife Hilaria, his sons Jason and Maurus, and all his household and the soldiers under his command. When news of this reached Emperor Numerian (r. 283–284), he ordered all the newly converted to be executed. The martyr tribune Claudius was drowned in the sea, and his sons and soldiers were beheaded. Christians buried the bodies of the holy martyrs in a nearby cave, to which St. Hilaria constantly came to pray, for which she was later tracked down and also suffered a martyric death. Her memory is kept on March 19/April 1 together with the martyrs Chrysanthus and Daria and their entire company.
