Hierarch Clement of Ohrid

Hierarch Clement of Ohrid — a disciple of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, continuer of their work of enlightening the Slavs; the first bishop to celebrate services in the Slavonic language, he organized a system for training Slavic clergy in Ohrid (First Bulgarian Empire); he reposed in the Monastery of St. Panteleimon in Ohrid, which he founded.
Hierarch Clement was one of the closest disciples of Equal-to-the-Apostles Cyril and Methodius, participating with them in the mission to enlighten the Slavic peoples and create Slavic writing. After the death of his teachers and the expulsion of their disciples from Great Moravia by the Latin clergy, Hierarch Clement found refuge in the First Bulgarian Empire, in the city of Ohrid (now in North Macedonia), where he continued the work of his mentors as a Bulgarian and pan-Slavic enlightener. He became the first bishop to celebrate services in the Slavonic language and organized a school in Ohrid for training Slavic clergy, through which thousands of students passed. He founded a monastery dedicated to the Great Martyr Panteleimon in Ohrid, where he reposed around 916 and was buried at the monastery. His memory is kept on July 27/August 9.
