Venerable, Hegumen Columban of Luxeuil (Bobbio)

Venerable Columban — an Irish missionary monk, disciple of the Bangor community; around 590 he left with 12 companions for the continent and founded the monasteries of Annegray, Luxeuil, and Fontaine in the Vosges, and near the end of his life the monastery of Bobbio in Italy, which became a major center of Western monasticism.
Venerable Columban was born around 543 in Leinster, Ireland. He received his education and monastic formation at the famous monastery of Bangor. Around 590 he set out with twelve disciples on a mission to the European continent, where amid the forests of the Vosges (in present-day France) he founded the monasteries of Annegray, Luxeuil, and Fontaine, introducing into them a strict Irish rule. Due to conflict with local bishops and the Frankish court he was forced to leave Gaul; after wanderings through the lands of the Alemanni and the Lombards, near the end of his life he founded the monastery of Bobbio in Italy, which later became one of the most important centers of learning and monastic life in the medieval West. He died on November 23, 615, in Bobbio. His memory is kept on November 21/December 4.
