Venerable Coprius of Palestine — as an infant he was found by monks of the monastery of St. Theodosius the Great lying on a dung-heap ("kopria" in Greek), where his mother had left him while fleeing a Hagarene raid; raised by the monastery, he took monastic vows and spent his entire life there.
Venerable Coprius was found by the monks of the monastery of St. Theodosius the Great in Palestine as an infant, lying on a dung-heap — "kopria" in Greek, whence his name. His mother had left him there while fleeing during another Hagarene (Arab nomad) raid on Palestinian lands. The monks took the infant, fed him with goat's milk, and raised him in their monastery. Coming of age, Coprius took monastic vows and spent his whole life in his native monastery, acquiring the virtues of obedience and humility. His memory is kept on September 24/October 7.
