Venerable Cornelius of Paleostrov, Olonets — a native of Pskov, at the end of the 14th century he founded a monastic community on the island of Paliy on Lake Onega, built a church of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos and a refectory church dedicated to the Prophet Elijah; he spent his final years as a hermit in a cave near the monastery, wearing chains. Venerable Cornelius was born in Pskov. In his youth he left his native city and wandered through monasteries and deserts, and according to tradition spent some time at Valaam. At the end of the 14th century he settled on the secluded island of Paliy on Lake Onega, where, despite the remoteness of the place, a monastic brotherhood gathered around him. The venerable one built for them a church in honor of the Nativity of the Most Holy Theotokos and a refectory church dedicated to the Prophet Elijah, laying the foundation for the Paleostrov Nativity Monastery. In his final years, Venerable Cornelius labored in a cave half a verst from the monastery, remaining in constant prayer and wearing chains. He peacefully reposed around 1420. His relics were transferred to the monastery church by his disciple, Venerable Abramy of Paleostrov. His memory is kept on May 19/June 1.
