Venerable Abba Daniel of Scetis

Venerable Daniel of Scetis (Abba Daniel) — an Egyptian desert-dweller, disciple of St. Arsenius the Great; his sayings (apophthegmata) were included in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers (Scetic Patericon) — a collection of instructive stories and sayings of the ancient monk-ascetics; he died around or shortly after 420.
Venerable Daniel labored in the Egyptian desert of Scetis and was a close disciple of St. Arsenius the Great. The Scetic Patericon preserved a number of his sayings (apophthegmata) about his teacher: Abba Daniel related that St. Arsenius's eyelashes had fallen out from his ceaseless tears of penitent prayer, and conveyed his teacher's testament to his disciples not to hold memorial meals for him, since a monk prepares for himself the true "banquet of love" through the deeds of his own life. Venerable Daniel died around or shortly after 420. He is venerated in the Synaxis of the Venerable Fathers who shone forth in Scetis.
