Venerable Daniel the Black, Iconographer

Venerable Daniel the Black — a renowned Moscow iconographer and monk, an older contemporary and mentor of Venerable Andrei Rublev; together with him he painted the frescoes of the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir; he died shortly after Andrei Rublev and was buried beside him at the Andronikov Monastery of the Savior in Moscow.
Venerable Daniel, later given the epithet "the Black" (the nickname is known from the text of the "Tale of the Holy Iconographers" from the late 17th - early 18th century; in earlier sources he is called simply Daniel), was a monk and renowned iconographer, an older contemporary, mentor, and fellow ascetic of Venerable Andrei Rublev. Chronicles attest that Daniel and Andrei Rublev together painted the frescoes of the Dormition Cathedral in Vladimir in 1408, with Daniel named first in the chronicle — indicating his seniority and greater experience in iconography. Venerable Daniel died around 1428, shortly after the repose of his younger fellow ascetic Andrei Rublev, and was buried beside him at the Andronikov Monastery of the Savior in Moscow. His memory is kept on June 4/17, as well as in the Synaxis of the Saints of Radonezh.
