Right-Believing Tsarevich Demetrius of Uglich — the youngest son of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible, who died under mysterious circumstances in Uglich at the age of eight; his death led to the extinction of the Moscow branch of the Rurik dynasty and became one of the causes of the Time of Troubles; his relics, found incorrupt in 1606, glorified the tsarevich with numerous miracles and healings, especially for those suffering from eye ailments.
Right-Believing Tsarevich Demetrius was born on October 19, 1582, the youngest son of Tsar Ivan IV the Terrible from his seventh marriage to Maria Nagaya. After his father's death in 1584, he was removed from Moscow together with his mother to Uglich, given to him as an appanage. On May 15, 1591, the eight-year-old tsarevich died under circumstances never fully clarified: according to the official version of the investigative commission headed by Vasily Shuisky, he inflicted a fatal knife wound on himself during a fit of epilepsy while playing; according to a version widespread among the people, the tsarevich was murdered on the secret order of Boris Godunov, who aspired to the throne. The tsarevich's death led to the extinction of the Moscow line of the Rurik dynasty and became one of the main causes of the subsequent Time of Troubles, marked by the appearance of the False Dmitrys. He was buried in the palace church of the Transfiguration of the Lord in Uglich. Numerous miracles and healings began to occur at the tsarevich's tomb, especially frequent healings of those suffering from eye ailments. On June 3, 1606, the relics of the right-believing tsarevich were found incorrupt and solemnly transferred from Uglich to Moscow, to the Archangel Cathedral of the Moscow Kremlin. His memory is kept on May 15/28 (death) and June 3/16 (translation of relics).
